VISTA – Volvo Trucks’ and Volvo Buses’ worldwide competition and training programme for mechanics and service personnel – has now reached the semi-finals. They are being held at seven locations on five continents. A record 3500 teams from 70 countries have been gradually reduced to about 150 teams and 600 participants. The winners will go on to the world finals in Göteborg this June.

VISTA is the biggest training programme of its kind in the world, and its main aim is to enhance the expertise of mechanics as well as of spare parts personnel, administrators and warranty staff. High competence in the service organisation is an important component in Volvo Trucks’ and Volvo Buses’ total offer. This applies equally well in the current economic downturn since service requirements grow as many customers postpone the renewal of their vehicle fleets.

“By the time the VISTA world champions are announced this June, the competition will have involved more than 300,000 hours of training, much of that in employees’ free time since the competitors have often been immensely dedicated and highly motivated,” says Johanna Lundberg, overall project manager for VISTA. The Department of Minerals and Energy (DME), together with the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), has established a renewable energy market transformation programme (REMT) to assist investors in overcoming some of the obstacles and barriers preventing growth in the renewable energy sector.

Some $8,3-million in funding has been made available for the programme, and this came from government ($2,3-million), and global financial institutions, namely the World Bank, through its global environment facility ($6-million).

However, the project was worth some $17,3-million, as about $9-million of already installed capacity from the private sector was contributed.

The project’s objectives were to “remove the barriers and reduce the implementation costs of renewable energy technologies, and also to promote on-grid electricity for renewable energy sources”, explained REMT project coordinator Moses Chundu.

Eskom gives assurance that MTPPP programme is intact

South African power utility Eskom has dismissed suggestions that its Medium Term Power Purchase Programme, better known as the ‘MTPPP’, has been delayed and says that it is in the final stages of adjudicating proposals.

Engineering News has received correspondence for several potential participants expressing concern that the process had seemingly stalled.

Some even raised whether the process might not be headed in the same direction as Eskom’s so-called multisite base-load independent power producer (IPP) programme, which had been delayed until to May, at the earliest. The State-owned enterprises said that the decision to postpone the release of the request for proposals for the IPP programme had been taken to allow time for outstanding regulatory matters to be dealt with.
